The Blackmagic Design 12G-SDI SFP Optical Module is an SFP optical module that carries SDI video over optical fiber in SD, HD and Ultra HD formats. It plugs into the optional SFP socket of Blackmagic Design devices, for example the Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G or the Teranex Mini Optical to HDMI 12G. It uses duplex LC connectors for singlemode fiber and a wavelength of 1310 nm.
12G-SDI over optical fiber
Insert the module into the SFP socket of a compatible Blackmagic Design device and the SDI signal travels over optical fiber, which covers far greater distances than coaxial cable.
For 12G-SDI
The 12G module carries SD, HD and Ultra HD formats. It fits the same SFP socket as the 3G and 6G modules.

Which devices it fits
The Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G, which converts SDI to optical fiber and back, has an SFP socket, and so do the Teranex Mini Optical to HDMI 12G and the Teranex Mini HDMI to Optical 12G. The module is bought separately for them, so you choose 3G, 6G or 12G according to the signals you need to carry. The 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G SFP and the 2110 IP Mini IP to HDMI SFP also have an SFP socket that accepts 3G, 6G and 12G modules. The DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G and the UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 also offer an optional optical input and output for up to two SMPTE modules.
The difference between 3G, 6G and 12G modules
The 3G module carries SD and HD signals, while the 6G and 12G modules carry SD, HD and Ultra HD. The Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G and the Teranex Mini devices handle formats up to 2160p60, so choose the 6G or 12G module for Ultra HD.
Optical fiber instead of coaxial cable
SDI over optical fiber covers distances that coaxial cable cannot, and uses the same affordable optical cables as computer networks. The signal runs over a duplex link with LC connectors and singlemode fiber.
What you need besides the module
At each end of the link you need a device with an SFP module, and singlemode fiber with duplex LC connectors between them. You will find a suitable patch cable in the accessories.
