The Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter attaches to the back of an URSA Broadcast or URSA Mini camera and converts video, audio, power, intercom, tally and camera control into a single hybrid SMPTE cable. You can operate the camera up to 2 km from the control room or outside broadcast truck, and the rear panel gives you the familiar controls of a studio camera.

The converter combines video, audio, intercom, tally, camera control and power in a single hybrid SMPTE cable, so no extra cables or expensive extenders are needed.

Range up to 2 km on a single cable

A camera position is often far from the control room – in a studio, in a stadium or next to an outside broadcast truck. SDI has a limited range, and running power, intercom, tally, video and audio separately is expensive and complex. The Camera Fiber Converter and Studio Fiber Converter pair combines everything in a single SMPTE cable up to 2 km long. It suits news, interviews, series, sports broadcasts, webcasting and schools.

The SMPTE standard and safety

The converter uses the standard SMPTE 311M hybrid cable with SMPTE 304 connectors: two optical fibers, a data pair, a power pair and a central strength member. After safety checks, the Studio Fiber Converter sends the standard 200 V down the cable for the camera and accessories. Microcontrollers at both ends monitor the power and cut it instantly if the cable is damaged or an earth leak is detected.

Studio controls on the back of the camera

Studio cameras are operated from the rear, whereas television cameras have their controls on the side. The converter therefore adds return buttons, two sets of intercom controls with program mix, a record button, focus and an iris control to the back of the camera.

Intercom and tally

Two dual-channel intercoms with standard 5-pin XLR connectors for professional headsets, three-way audio mixing on each output and a 10-pin Tracker connector with an additional intercom and tally for the crane operator when both headsets are in use. If the fiber fails, the intercom switches automatically to a backup channel over the data pair of the SMPTE cable. Headsets and cables with a 5-pin XLR are not included in the package.

10G Ethernet and IP video

The SMPTE link is an open 10G Ethernet connection, so video and return feeds are IP video with lossless 10-bit encoding. Intercom, tally, camera and lens control are also converted to low-latency IP; the delay is less than one frame.

Rugged design

The all-metal body matches URSA Broadcast and URSA Mini cameras, the full-size connectors have dust caps, and a V-Lock plate on top takes accessories such as the professional Blackmagic Studio Viewfinder. The converter is built for demanding outdoor work and round-the-clock operation.

Three drawings show where the individual connections and controls are located on the converter: the side with connections, the other side with the D-Tap output and the rear panel with controls.
