Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K is a miniature Ultra HD and HD camera for live studio production whose image quality outperforms much larger and more expensive models. It has a 4K sensor, an MFT lens mount (B4 and other lenses via adapters), a 6G-SDI output, talkback and tally, and a DB-HD15 expansion port for remote control (PTZ, B4 lenses, S.Bus, LANC). Thanks to its tiny size you can hide it virtually anywhere in the studio. An LP-E6 battery is included, the camera is supplied without a lens.

Image settings from the switcher

When connected to an ATEM switcher, the camera receives commands for iris, focus, zoom, white balance and color correction via its SDI input. The switcher operator sets up the image without anyone having to go to the camera.

Shots where no other camera fits

The camera is so small that you can mount it on a basketball hoop, backstage or on a crane arm. Its tiny size and open standards make it a tool for reality shows, sports, news and concerts, and every extra hidden position adds a new angle to the broadcast.

SDI for video and control

The 6G-SDI output with a Micro BNC connector (DIN 1.0/2.3) carries 10-bit 4:2:2 video. The SDI input receives control data, tally and talkback from an ATEM switcher. An iPhone or Android style headset plugs into the 3.5 mm connector and talkback is carried on channels 15 and 16 of the SDI signal. Devices with full size BNC connectors need a DIN 1.0/2.3 to BNC cable.

DB-HD15 expansion port

The port carries 12 V power, a reference input for genlock, LANC, PTZ control via RS-422, control of digital B4 lenses and S.Bus digital servo with 17 channels. The expansion cable is included. The HDMI output provides 1080p video with the camera menu and a tally border for a preview monitor.

Power with battery backup

The camera accepts LP-E6 and LP-E6N batteries. When powered via the expansion port the battery is trickle charged, and if mains power fails the camera switches to the battery without interruption. One LP-E6 battery is included.

Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K fits in the palm of your hand, yet it has a high quality Ultra HD sensor with very detailed images. It is suitable for Ultra HD and HD programs and offers built-in color correction, communication and signalling features, outputs for controlling PTZ devices and B4 lenses, and an MFT lens mount that accepts many types of lenses via adapters.

In HD mode the camera makes use of the high sensor resolution, so color artifacts caused by the sensor design are eliminated. The result is a clean RGB HD image with fine detail that outperforms many larger and more expensive studio cameras. Its small size and open standards make it an ideal tool for reality shows, sports events, news or concerts: you can hide the camera almost anywhere and gain extra, practically invisible positions for more engaging broadcasts.

The body is made of a strong and light magnesium alloy and is not much larger than the lens mount itself. The camera works with affordable Micro Four Thirds lenses, and with B4 lenses via an adapter. It has a 6G-SDI output and an SDI input for remote control from Blackmagic Design switchers, which can change white balance, black level, gamma, focus, iris and lens zoom.

The serial port for remote control uses a common DB-HD15 connector and offers a PTZ output for motorized tripod heads as well as an output for controlling B4 studio lenses. Custom remote control systems can be built on the S.Bus standard. The port also carries a power input, the LANC protocol and a sync input.

Blackmagic Camera 4.2 update

The Blackmagic Camera 4.2 update was intended for owners of Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K and Blackmagic studio cameras. On studio cameras it improved 3G-SDI compatibility, and on Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K the audio on the SDI output; on URSA Mini 4.6K it added dark shading calibration.

Blackmagic Camera 4.7 update

Update 4.7 added the 720p50, 720p59.94 and 720p60 formats, the HD broadcast standard used in Europe and by some American broadcasters. Frame rates up to 60p allow high quality slow motion, for example in sports. The firmware increased sensor sensitivity by two stops, so the camera delivers better images in low light, and added RAW data output via SDI, which lets you work directly with 12-bit sensor data. New remote control options were also added: PTZ communication via the VISCA protocol over the expansion port, new S.Bus commands, and record start and stop commands via SDI and HDMI that make working with external recorders easier.
