Blackmagic Ultimatte 12 4K is an advanced real time keyer and compositing processor for live broadcast, virtual sets and broadcast graphics with 12G-SDI connections for HD and Ultra HD up to 2160p60. It offers a 2.2″ LCD with preset buttons, a 6 GB Media Pool frame store, SMPTE 2110 input and output over 10G Ethernet, dual built-in power supplies and control via free software or the Smart Remote 4 panel.

12G-SDI for HD today and Ultra HD
Ultimatte 12 4K has 12G-SDI connections for HD and Ultra HD up to 2160p60 and works with virtually all SD, HD, 3G, 6G and 12G-SDI equipment. The seven compositing inputs have loop outputs, and the program, fill, matte and talent outputs are doubled.
SMPTE 2110 and 10G Ethernet
The Ethernet port up to 10 Gb/s handles SMPTE 2110 IP video (foreground input and program output), device control and fast loading of stills into the frame store. Reference can come from Tri-Sync, Black Burst or PTP. Dual built-in power supplies provide redundancy for on air use.
Advanced algorithms and a huge color space
All Ultimatte 12 models, even Ultimatte 12 HD Mini, have the same advanced algorithms and a huge internal color space, so they all produce identical quality compositions. The processing automatically generates internal mattes and processes different parts of the image separately based on the colors in each area: fine edge detail where it is needed most, like on hair, and smoother transitions between colors.
One touch automatic keying
Ultimatte 12 analyzes the scene and automatically sets over 100 parameters. Just make sure the scene is well lit and the cameras are white balanced, then activate the auto key. Screen Correction also compensates for unevenly lit green or blue screens.
Fixed camera virtual sets
All models have a 6 GB Media Pool frame store for pre rendered still frames of a 3D modeled set. That means a virtual set even in a small room and without external equipment – each camera gets its own Ultimatte 12 with a background loaded. If the cameras don't move, the backgrounds look perfect.
Translucent layers, shadows and reflections
The layer compositing mode adds tinted objects such as colored glass or graphics on top of the foreground and preserves their colors even when the talent walks behind them. Improved algorithms remove green tinting and spill, map shadows correctly onto the new background and handle transparent objects with reflections.
Faithful colors even with difficult shades
New flare, edge and transition processing removes the background without affecting the colors you want to keep – such as a bright yellow dress in front of a green screen. Ultimatte 12 treats different parts of the image separately while keeping color transitions smooth.
Control via software or the Smart Remote 4 panel
All models include the free Ultimatte Software Control for Mac and Windows, which also uploads still frames to the frame store; settings are kept in flash memory when the power is off. The optional Ultimatte Smart Remote 4 controls up to eight Ultimatte 12 units over Ethernet, and thanks to the monitor cascade you can view them all on a single SDI monitor without a video router.

The rear has dual AC power inputs, USB, Ethernet, reference in and out, GPIO, SDI inputs for background, background matte, garbage matte, foreground, holdout matte, layer and layer matte with loop outputs, program, fill, matte and talent outputs and monitor in and out; the front has preset and menu buttons, a 2.2″ LCD and a spin knob.

About the Ultimatte 12 range
Ultimatte has led green and blue screen keying in television news for over 40 years; since its founding in 1976 the company has won numerous awards, including Emmy and Oscar awards. Its technology ensures seamless real time integration of presenters, guests and commentators into virtual sets.
Ultimatte 12 is affordable, so every camera position can be fitted with a top quality keyer. In multi camera productions each camera sees the screen slightly differently; a keyer built into a switcher uses the same settings for all cameras, whereas a separate Ultimatte 12 on each camera is adjusted individually. It is also ideal for previsualization in film and television, letting actors and filmmakers see the virtual scene while shooting.
British broadcaster Sky News uses Ultimatte 12 for the virtual set of its Sunrise morning news program – sports, weather and other segments rely on edge detection in difficult areas such as hair and on color correction for natural skin tones.
