Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Replay 12G is a compact Thunderbolt 4 device for simultaneous capture and playback over 12G-SDI. It is designed for live replay, broadcast graphics with fill and key and professional work up to Ultra HD 2160p60. Besides the fill and key outputs it has a separate monitor output and a 12G-SDI input, so the computer can capture, process and output video in real time.

This compact interface for Thunderbolt 4 computers combines a 12G-SDI input with separate fill and key outputs and a monitor output. It suits instant replay, graphics and ingest in DaVinci Resolve.

Replay without a bulky rack

Connect the input to the switcher multiview output and use the recording straight away for repeat playback. The device stays small and is powered directly from the Thunderbolt port.

Replay and broadcast graphics from the computer

This 12G-SDI-only model can capture and play back at the same time. Connect the input to the switcher multiview output, then play the replay through the fill and key outputs, complete with an automatic stinger. The computer can even act as a real-time AI image processor.

Three independent SDI paths

Two program outputs provide fill and key for titles or automated graphics; the third, monitor output is always active, so you can set up the next replay on it. The 12G-SDI input is ideal for monitoring the switcher multiview.

Fill and key into the switcher

The fill and key outputs connect to the switcher downstream keyer, which can be muted so the video will not key on air until the replay starts. The interface has hardware support for RGBA and YUVA frame buffers and converts RGBA graphics to 10-bit YUV 4:2:2:4 on both outputs.

How fill and key work

The fill output carries the color graphics, the key output their transparency. The switcher combines them with the background, and on the program output the graphics appear over live video with smooth edges.

News and replay in DaVinci Resolve

The cut page in DaVinci Resolve offers editing, a media player and replay features, and plays virtually any file format. Clips with an alpha channel are output as 10-bit SDI fill and key, the multi source viewer shows clips that match in time in a multiview, and the on air controls let the key output enable the switcher downstream keyer with a single button – including an automatic stinger.

Three models in the UltraStudio Mini 12G range

Mini Monitor 12G only plays back from the computer, Mini Recorder 12G only captures from 12G-SDI and HDMI, and Mini Replay 12G handles 12G-SDI capture and playback at the same time. All three work in SD, HD and Ultra HD up to 2160p60.

Connections

One side has four BNC connectors – the 12G-SDI fill and key outputs, the monitor output and the 12G-SDI input –, the opposite side a Thunderbolt 4 port for data and power. This model has no HDMI output.

Dimensions and weight

The body measures 148 × 81 × 25 mm and weighs 300 g, taking up minimal space on the desk next to the computer.
