Video Assist 5″ 3G combines a portable monitor, professional HD recorder, scopes and a high-quality alternative viewfinder in one compact device.
Monitor, recorder and scopes in one
Video Assist connects to any camera with an SDI or HDMI output and replaces a separate monitor, recorder and measuring instrument – on set, in live production and when testing equipment.
Focus and exposure assist
Focus peaking, focus zoom, zebra, false color, histogram and frame guides are switched on directly on the touchscreen.
3D LUTs for monitoring and recording
Loads 17 and 33 point 3D LUTs. The look can be applied for monitoring only or baked into the recorded file.
Webcam output
Over USB-C it appears to a computer as a standard 1080p webcam – for OBS, Zoom, YouTube Live or Skype.
Digital slate and metadata
Swipe from the edge of the screen to open the digital slate; take numbers can increment automatically and the metadata carries over to DaVinci Resolve.
Improve any camera
SDI and HDMI connectivity adds a larger touchscreen, focus assist, zebra, false color, histogram and other tools for confident focus and exposure. Rig the monitor wherever it is most comfortable to see, giving the operator, assistant and director better awareness of the shot.
Edit-ready files
10-bit Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD recording provides higher quality than the internal codecs of many cameras, with files ready to open directly in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. Older cameras gain modern recording formats without transcoding.
Scopes always available
Waveform, vectorscope, RGB parade and histogram can be displayed directly on the monitor without a separate measuring instrument – full screen, as a transparent overlay on the picture or with a small picture in picture view in the corner. Ideal for checking camera exposure and signal levels against broadcast standards.
Recording to SD card
The built in recorder writes to common SDHC and SDXC UHS-I cards that are affordable and easy to obtain. Cards are formatted as ExFAT or HFS+, so a computer reads them like a regular disk and files can be copied straight into editing.
Audio from SDI and HDMI
The 5-inch model records audio embedded in the signal – up to 16 channels from SDI and up to 8 channels from HDMI – at 48 kHz and 24 bit. For monitoring it has a 3.5 mm headphone output and a built in speaker for clip playback.
Two NP-F batteries and 12 V power
The rear has two slots for Sony NP-F (L-Series) batteries. Batteries can be changed one at a time without interrupting recording. In the studio the monitor runs from the included 12 V power supply; batteries are not included, an NP-F battery USB charger is.
Connections
The left side has SDI input and output on Micro BNC connectors and HDMI input and output. The right side has the power button, headphone output, SD card slot and +12 V external power input.
Rear and bottom
The rear has two slots for Sony NP-F batteries, with the tally light on the top edge. The bottom has the USB-C port and mounting points; further mounting points are on the top.

Blackmagic Video Assist 5″ 3G is a camera monitor, video recorder and tool for measuring the video signal. It adds a larger viewfinder and recording to high-quality codecs to any camera with an SDI or HDMI output. It supports standard formats up to 1080p60, scopes, focus assist, a tally light and 3D LUT correction.
The large touchscreen makes monitoring, recording, playback, signal measurement and focusing easy. Timecode, transport controls, audio meters and histogram, false color and 3D LUTs are available; LUTs can be applied directly into the files or non-destructively for monitoring only.
The integrated recorder uses common UHS-I SD cards with the ExFAT and HFS+ file systems. Video Assist is a practical addition to cameras with small or dim displays and can extend older models with the Apple ProRes and Avid DNx recording formats.
Touch control gives quick access to playback, a mini timeline and information on timecode, video standard or audio levels.
