A five-source video switcher with a 10.1" touchscreen

The L4 is a portable video switcher for multi-camera live production. It takes five sources at once — four HDMI and one SDI — so a single desk becomes a complete gallery for a wedding, a church service, a sports broadcast, a concert, live commerce or a corporate presentation.

There are two ways to drive it at once: touch on the 10.1" screen, and buttons with a rotary knob. The display shows all five inputs side by side, the PST preview and the PGM programme output, with the control panel below — the menu does not cover the rest of the picture, so you never have to look away mid-show.

The body is all aluminium and a built-in fan starts by itself at power-up. The unit is built for long broadcasts, not for a few minutes.

Embedded audio, external audio, or a mix of both

The L4 handles sound as well as picture. It takes the audio embedded in the HDMI and SDI signals, and adds its own 3.5 mm input for a microphone and a 3.5 mm output for headphones or monitoring. It can mix two channels at once — typically the presenter’s microphone and the sound from a computer.

Levels for every input are shown on screen in real time, so clipping or a dead microphone shows up straight away rather than in the finished recording. Audio can also be detached from video and kept running from one source while the picture is switched.

Chroma key and logo overlay

Chroma key drops a plain background and replaces it with another source. The menu selects the background layer and the body layer separately, the key colour is picked straight from the picture with an eyedropper, and tolerance and position are trimmed with buttons. It handles both green and blue screens.

The L4 will also lay your own logo over the picture. The image is uploaded through the Feelworld Live Plus app, should be 256 × 128 pixels, and is uploaded one at a time.

Histogram, picture-in-picture and thirteen transitions

The brightness histogram shows the exposure spread next to the preview, so a blown-out or underexposed source is caught on set rather than in post. It is switched on in the menu together with the audio meters.

Picture-in-picture works with any of the five inputs, offers five positions for the sub window, and main and sub swap with a single tap. There are thirteen transitions and their length is set from 0.5 to 5 seconds.

There are three ways to switch: the AUTO button with the chosen transition, the CUT button straight from preview to programme, or the T-bar by hand — which has to be pushed all the way to the end stop. Buttons 1 to 5 report the state of each source: steady green when the signal is on the main output, flashing for the selected or edited one, and unlit when the source is not connected or its resolution is not supported.

Control from a computer and from a phone

Over the LAN port the L4 is driven by the Feelworld Live Plus app — for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. The app also offers functions the hardware alone cannot set, and it lets the gallery sit away from where the shoot happens. There is one condition: the computer or phone must be on the same local network as the L4.

Over USB 3.0 the L4 appears to a computer as an ordinary webcam, so it works in OBS, Zoom, Skype, Teams and Webex with no drivers, and from there to YouTube, Facebook or TikTok. Note for MacBooks: the L4 has to be connected to the USB 3.0 port of a Type-C hub, otherwise OBS will not find it.

Alongside the stream there is an HDMI output up to 1080p60 and a separate SDI output. Both carry the PGM picture with the previews and meters, so a large monitor shows the whole crew the same thing at once.

Recommended setups

For a medium production the manufacturer reckons on two or three cameras for close-ups and wide shots plus a computer running the slides. For a large one, three to five cameras, a computer and a PTZ controller — the PTZ cameras are driven by their own controller over the network while the L4 switches their pictures.

Besides the USB 3.0 streaming port there is a USB type-A port on the back, used for firmware updates and for loading the logo file.
