A seven-inch production monitor with a Full HD 1920 × 1200 IPS panel at 1600 cd/m², bright enough to stay readable in direct sun. The 12G-SDI input and output carry 4K over a single cable and cross conversion links SDI with HDMI 2.0 in both directions. It is operated by touch and offers HDR, custom 3D LUTs loaded from a memory card and looped out to the outputs, and a full set of scopes — waveform, vector scope, histogram, peaking and false colours. The body is machined from aluminium. Power comes from the DC input or from the included plate for two Sony NP-F series batteries; the batteries themselves and a power adapter are not included.

Full HD 1920 × 1200 at 1600 cd/m²

The S7 was the first seven-inch monitor with 12G-SDI. Instead of the four 3G-SDI cables a 4K signal used to be split across, one is enough — and it ends the awkward situation of shooting in 4K while the gallery watches 2K. The IPS panel at 1600 cd/m² stays readable in direct sun.

One cable instead of four

The 12G-SDI interface is backward compatible with 6G-SDI, 3G-SDI, HD-SDI and SD-SDI and carries up to 12 Gb/s, so it copes with both high resolution and high frame rates. Input and output loop through, so the signal passes on to another monitor or recorder without losing quality.

On the back there is a 12G-SDI input, 12G-SDI and 3G-SDI outputs, HDMI 2.0 in and out, and the power socket. Cross conversion sends the picture from SDI to HDMI and the other way round, so the monitor sits between devices that would otherwise not talk to each other.

Colours you can trust

CALMAN calibration, DCI-P3 gamut

The 10-bit panel shows 1.07 billion colours, contrast is 1200:1 and viewing angles are 160° all round, so several people can watch at once. The monitor calibrates with CALMAN software and covers the DCI-P3 film gamut, so the shades match what you will see in post.

Tools for the set

Waveform, vector scope, brightness histogram, YUV and Y parade, peaking, false colours, zebra, per-channel check field, nine grid, safe-area and ratio markers, anamorphic mode, image flip and freeze, and zoom. Peaking outlines the edges in focus in red, green or blue, whichever stands out best against the shot.

You load a custom 3D LUT from a memory card and the monitor shows the finished look right on set. The same LUT can be sent to the HDMI and SDI outputs, so the gallery sees the graded picture on the big monitor too. The monitor menu is in English, which is why the tool names on the picture are left as they are.

Touch control

Sliding on the left half of the screen sets the backlight, on the right the volume — without going into the menu. HDR mode pulls detail out of both highlights and shadows, so you do not lose the sky or the dark areas.

Into live production

With the FEELWORLD L2 PLUS switcher you convert an SDI signal to the HDMI output and send it straight to air. A tally connector lights the monitor red, green or amber on a cue from the gallery. The body is machined from aluminium and cooling relies on airflow, so the monitor survives a long shooting day without a fan in the picture.

Power from two batteries

The box includes a plate for two Sony NP-F series batteries (F970, F960, F950, F930, F770, F750, F730, F570, F550 and F530), so the second battery can be swapped without switching the monitor off. It also runs from the DC input, and the plate can optionally be replaced with V-mount. The batteries themselves and a power adapter are not included — allow for that when ordering.

Menu and what is in the box

The menu is available in eleven languages — Czech and Slovak are not among them, the unit is operated in English. The box holds the monitor, a mini HDMI cable, an HDMI cable, the F970 dual battery plate, the snail head with a hex key, and the manual.
