Softer highlights, a film look

Black Mist scatters the light around bright areas — street lamps take on a gentle glow, blown highlights soften and skin loses its digital hardness. Contrast in the deep shadows drops a little, so the picture looks more filmic straight out of the camera. Unlike an effect added in post, the diffusion follows the actual light in the scene.

The glass carries 28 anti-reflective layers and reflects only 0.2 % of the light, so no ghosting or veiling appears against the light.

One glass does two jobs at once: it diffuses highlights like a Black Mist 1/4 and at the same time cuts one to nine stops of light, continuously. A backlit portrait or video in the midday sun can be shot with the aperture open without stacking two filters on the lens; the strength is set with a lever on the frame.
