Nano-X Black Mist filter 1/2 77 mm, softens the highlights and takes off digital sharpness. It suits portraits, night streets and video wherever the picture should look softer and less digital without being reworked on the computer afterwards.

Softer highlights, a film look

Black Mist scatters the light around bright areas — street lamps take on a gentle glow, blown highlights soften and skin loses its digital hardness. Contrast in the deep shadows drops a little, so the picture looks more filmic straight out of the camera. Unlike an effect added in post, the diffusion follows the actual light in the scene.

The surface repels water and grease, so drops run off and fingerprints wipe away without smears; the coating also stands up to cleaning in the field. Strength 1/2 is the third of the four grades in the range (1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 1). The glow around lights is pronounced and contrast noticeably softer, so it suits night scenes, concerts and video that should look as if shot on film; for a gentle daytime portrait the weaker 1/8 or 1/4 is enough.
