The Module 8 L1 Tuner for PL lenses gives the image on a Sony E mirrorless camera the cinematic look of Super Baltar lenses with glowing halation and softer contrast. You dial in the strength of the effect with the Vari-Tune ring during the shot without losing focus. The Tuner has no electronics, so the camera mount can be swapped for Canon RF, L-Mount or Fujifilm X.

Halation, not diffusion

The variable halation comes from controlled spherical aberration, making it more accurate than the uniform scatter of a diffusion filter.

The PL Tuner has no electronics, so the camera-side mount can be swapped for Sony E, Canon RF, L-Mount or Fujifilm X.

The L1 look: Super Baltar

L1 is inspired by the Super Baltar lenses from Bausch & Lomb – it adds glamour, glowing halation and reduced contrast, the nostalgic warmth, romance and gritty realism of classic films like The Godfather. At T/2.3 it gives the character of a vintage Super Baltar; with the lens opened up to T/1.4 it produces an intense, dreamlike look. Maxed out, the maker calls it the Wicked Baltar.

Vari-Tune: tuning on the fly

The geared tuning ring with a 0–10 scale and 60° rotation changes the amount of effect continuously and in real time without losing focus. You see the change immediately and fine-tune the look during the shot.

Swappable mounts

The PL Tuner has no electronics, so the camera-side mount can be swapped. This version comes with a Sony E mount; the Module 8 kits for Sony E, Canon RF, L-Mount and Fujifilm X contain the mount and five shims for precise flange distance adjustment.

PL lens compatibility

The PL Tuner works with a wide range of PL lenses as long as their rear elements do not protrude too far from the mount – check it with the included rear lens depth gauge. According to the maker’s rough compatibility table, DZOFilm Vespid, IRIX Cine or DULENS APO Mini Prime fit, while ARRI Ultra Prime and Cooke S4 fit only at some focal lengths.

The Tuners come in two lens mounts, EF and PL. The EF Tuners are made for Sony E and Canon RF bodies (including RED cameras with an RF mount) and have built-in electronics supporting autofocus, aperture control and image stabilisation of Canon, Sigma and Tamron lenses; because of it they cannot change camera mounts. The PL mount Tuner supports a wide range of PL lenses as long as the rear elements do not protrude too far, and since it has no electronics its mount can be swapped for Sony E, Canon RF, L-Mount (Blackmagic, Panasonic, Leica) or Fujifilm X.
