The Module 8 L3 Tuner for PL lenses gives the image on a Canon RF mirrorless camera Iain A. Neil’s off-axis anamorphic character, even with spherical optics. You dial in the strength of the effect with the Vari-Tune ring during the shot without losing focus. The Tuner has no electronics, so the camera mount can be swapped for Sony E, L-Mount or Fujifilm X.

The L3 look: Retroscope
L3 is the signature look of Module 8 co-founder Iain A. Neil, the culmination of decades designing iconic cinema lenses, especially anamorphics. With spherical optics it adds off-axis astigmatic character and different vertical and horizontal depth of field. Cropping to 2.4:1 adds an anamorphic feel, and with modern anamorphics the image becomes more organically cinematic.
Vari-Tune: tuning on the fly
The geared tuning ring with a 0–10 scale changes the amount of effect continuously and in real time without losing focus. You see the change immediately and fine-tune the look during the shot.
Swappable mounts
The PL Tuner has no electronics, so the camera-side mount can be swapped. This version comes with a Canon RF mount; the Module 8 kits for Sony E, Canon RF, L-Mount and Fujifilm X contain the mount and five shims for precise flange distance adjustment.
PL lens compatibility
The PL Tuner works with a wide range of PL lenses as long as their rear elements do not protrude too far from the mount – check it with the included rear lens depth gauge. According to the maker’s rough compatibility table, DZOFilm Vespid, IRIX Cine or DULENS APO Mini Prime fit, while ARRI Ultra Prime and Cooke S4 fit only at some focal lengths.

The Tuners come in two lens mounts, EF and PL. The EF Tuners are made for Sony E and Canon RF bodies (including RED cameras with an RF mount) and have built-in electronics supporting autofocus, aperture control and image stabilisation of Canon, Sigma and Tamron lenses; because of it they cannot change camera mounts. The PL mount Tuner supports a wide range of PL lenses as long as the rear elements do not protrude too far, and since it has no electronics its mount can be swapped for Sony E, Canon RF, L-Mount (Blackmagic, Panasonic, Leica) or Fujifilm X.
