The Tilta MB-T17-VND 114 mm Variable ND Filter covers 1 to 7 stops (ND 0.3 to 2.1) in a single piece of glass. Density changes steplessly, so exposure can be corrected even when the light shifts mid-take. A high-precision nano coating keeps colour true across the whole range — there is no colour shift even at seven stops. It slides into the Mirage Pro matte box like a tray and can be driven by a wireless motor.

The 114 mm Variable ND Filter for the Tilta Mirage Pro Matte Box was developed with leading optics manufacturers and replaces a whole set of fixed ND filters. It slides into the matte box like a tray and its density changes as the ring turns.

1 to 7 stops, steplessly

The range is ND 0.3 to 2.1, that is 1 to 7 stops: 0.3 (1 stop), 0.6 (2), 0.9 (3), 1.2 (4), 1.5 (5), 1.8 (6) and 2.1 (7). The transition between them is stepless, with no detents, so intermediate positions are available too. One piece of glass thus does the work of a set of fixed filters and there is no swapping mid-shoot.

Colour that does not move

The filter carries a high-precision nano coating that preserves colour across the whole density range. In the manufacturer's test (Sony FX3, Zeiss Milvus 50 mm f/1.4 at f/4, calibrated white point) it shows no visible colour shift even at 2.1 — seven stops — where an ordinary variable ND does.

What to watch out for

Between 1.8 and 2.1 a cross artefact can appear with some lenses. The manufacturer recommends using a longer focal length in that part of the range.

The filter can be driven wirelessly: through the MB-T17-UMA universal motor adapter a small focus motor (a Nucleus Nano II, for instance) can be fitted to it. The adapter, the motor and the controller are not included.
