The Tilta MB-T17-LRA-15 Rod Adapter puts the Mirage Pro matte box on 15 mm LWS rods and, unlike the fixed bracket, lets you set height and tilt. It works only together with the MB-T17-SAA swing-away adapter, which is sold separately — only that pair lets you swing the matte box aside for a lens change and tilt it against flare.

The Rod Adapter for the Tilta Mirage Pro Matte Box in the 15 mm LWS rods version is the adjustable way of mounting on rods. It adds the height and tilt adjustment the fixed mounting bracket does not have — in exchange it needs the swing-away adapter as an intermediate piece.

Height and tilt against flare

Assembled with the swing-away adapter and a rubber donut, the rod adapter lets the matte box tilt by ±25° and move ±15 mm in height. The tilt is there to kill the reflections that form between the filter glass and the front element — tip the matte box a couple of degrees forward or back and the ghost is gone. The height lines the matte box axis up with the lens even when the baseplate is not exactly to standard.

Requires the swing-away adapter

The rod adapter is not a mount in its own right: the matte box hangs on it through the MB-T17-SAA swing-away adapter, sold separately. Without that you cannot put the matte box on rods. Tilt is set by a wheel on the swing-away adapter, or remotely through the MB-T17-WA whip adapter.

Bracket or rod adapter?

The mounting bracket (MB-T17-MB-L15 / MB-T17-MB-S19) is cheaper and rigid — no height and no tilt adjustment, but it works on its own. The rod adapter does allow that adjustment, but it needs the MB-T17-SAA swing-away adapter and, for the full range, a rubber donut from the MB-T17-RDK set. The difference between them therefore runs both ways; it is not simply "better and worse".
