Tilta handheld rig for the RED KOMODO-X together with power — it includes a V-mount battery plate with 20 mm height adjustment and the Advanced I/O module. Ordinary V-mount batteries go on the plate — capacity for a whole shooting day. It adds run/stop, timecode, genlock, RED CTRL and 3-pin Fischer R/S ports to the rig and comes with an integrated EXT cable.

The Tilta Camera Cage for RED KOMODO-X Advanced Kit (V Mount) is the handheld rig plus power: on top of the cage, both handles, the 15 mm LWS baseplate and the rods come a V-mount battery plate with 20 mm of height adjustment and the Advanced I/O module. The camera then runs off a large battery and gains run/stop, timecode, genlock and RED CTRL ports.

A cage of five detachable parts

The cage is made of five separate parts: front top plate, left and right side arm, bottom plate and rear top plate. Each part can be removed and used on its own, so for a light handheld build only what you actually need stays on the camera — and for a full build the cage goes back together.

Mounting points all the way round

All the way round the cage there are NATO rails, a cold shoe, an ARRI rosette and 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threads with locating points. A monitor, a handle, a wireless mic receiver or an articulating arm can go almost anywhere — and thanks to the locating points the accessory stays where you set it, even when you lean on it.

Clamp-based lens adapter support

The lens adapter support does not clamp the adapter with a single screw but with a collar contacting it at several points. An adapter — a Canon RF to PL, say — then cannot twist or flex, and you can hang a long cine lens on it without worrying about the camera’s own mount.

Foldable top handle

The top handle is built specifically for the KOMODO-X. Swivel it and it moves out of the way, so you reach the camera’s top screen without taking it off. It carries another cold shoe, a 15 mm rod holder and 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threads with locating points, making it the second storey of the build.

External monitor on the handle

An external monitor can sit on the top handle; the manufacturer states compatibility with the RED DSMC3 RED TOUCH 7.0″ monitor. The handle still folds with the monitor fitted, so the rig can still be carried by the handle and the camera’s top screen stays reachable.

Walnut wooden side handle

The left side handle is turned from black walnut and stays comfortable after a long shooting day. It goes onto the NATO rail through an attachment and rotates to any angle, so you set the position to suit whether you hold the camera at eye level, at the hip or overhead.

Quick release plate in three positions

The quick release plate on the bottom of the cage slides forwards, to the centre or backwards — on the image those three positions are marked FRONT, MIDDLE and REAR. You balance the rig according to whether a long lens sits at the front or a battery at the back; on a gimbal the difference shows instantly.

Assembled and stripped down on set

The cage goes together and comes apart with ordinary tools — an Allen key and a flat screwdriver, nothing else needed. Going from a full build to a bare body can be done on set, between two takes.

V-mount battery plate with 20 mm adjustment

The battery plate converts the micro V-mount on the back of the KOMODO-X to a full-size V-mount, so a large battery goes on the camera and does not need changing every hour. The 20 mm height adjustment lets the plate move so the battery clears both the cables and the I/O module.

Power from a full-size battery

Ordinary V-mount batteries go on the plate — capacity for a whole shooting day. Between them the plate and the I/O module offer a 14.8 V 2-pin LEMO input/output, two more 14.8 V 2-pin LEMO ports, a 14.8 V P-Tap, USB-C and 14.8 V contact pins that feed the module itself.

The I/O module slides onto the pins

The I/O module lines up with the contact pins on the battery plate and slides into its slot; it draws power from there, or from the 2-pin input if you mount it elsewhere. It adds run/stop, timecode, genlock, RED CTRL and 3-pin Fischer R/S ports to the rig and comes with an integrated EXT cable.

Worth knowing

The manufacturer lists the kit for the RED KOMODO-X body. The battery plate and the I/O module come from the RED V-RAPTOR range (ESR-T08-BP-V and ESR-T08-IOM); the manufacturer supplies them with this kit.

The I/O module can also be mounted away from the battery plate and powered from the 2-pin input.

The 15 mm LWS baseplate has a Tilta Standard dovetail underneath. The optional 19 mm plate converts it to 19 mm rods and ARRI dovetails.
