The Tilta Illusion 95 mm Full Spectrum ND 1.8 is a circular neutral density filter for the Tilta Mirage matte box. It cuts visible, ultraviolet and infrared light evenly, so colours stay true: a density of 1.8 equals an ND64 factor and 6 stops. The 95 mm glass drops into the matte box tray. One filter is supplied.

Illusion is Tilta’s own filter line for the circular 95 mm standard of the Mirage matte box. Tilta built it on premium Water White glass with a double-sided nano coating so the filter can cope with the resolution of today’s cameras without introducing a colour shift.

A density of 1.8 equals an ND64 factor and 6 stops of light, so you can open up the aperture in bright daylight and keep a cinematic shutter. The manufacturer makes this line in densities from 0.3 to 2.4; we stock 0.9, 1.2 and 1.8.

Thin and light glass

The circular Illusion glass is noticeably thinner and lighter than traditional filters, so it does not weigh the matte box rig down and travels easily. The photo shows the Illusion leather filter pouch.

Double-sided nano coating

Tilta coats the filters using a 5 nm vacuum process and blends the layers for each coating separately: an anti-reflective film, a colour-separation film and a polarising film. The surface then resists scratches, repels water and oil, and reflects less.

Even attenuation

A neutral density filter may take light away, but it must not touch the colours while doing so. Full Spectrum ND attenuates visible, ultraviolet and infrared light to the same degree, so no colour shift appears in the image, nor the reddish cast that cheap ND filters produce by letting infrared through.

Built for the Mirage matte box

The filter is made for the circular 95 mm standard of the Tilta Mirage matte box — it drops into the tray and does not screw onto the lens. It cannot be used without a Mirage matte box or tray.
