The Tilta Mirage Pro Matte Box Starter Kit is the cheapest way into the carbon-fibre Mirage Pro matte box. The kit holds the matte box body with one 95 mm clamp-on adapter, two 4×5.65″ filter trays, a removable carbon hood and a top flag. The matte box clamps straight onto the lens, so no rods and no cage are needed — and it can be extended with further adapters, trays and flags at any time.

The Starter Kit is the Mirage Pro in a two-filter configuration with a single 95 mm clamp-on adapter. The body is carbon fibre, filters drop in from the top and the hood comes off at one push. Compared with the MB-T17 base kit it leaves out the step-down rings for photo lenses, the third filter tray and the rod mounting bracket — in exchange it costs markedly less and everything can be bought separately later.

1/4″–20 threads with locating pins

The top flag mounts on 1/4″–20 threads with locating pins, so it seats the same way every time and needs no aligning. When the flag is off, the free threaded surface stays on top — there is always something to screw on there, from a monitor mount to a transmitter.

Every tray has its own locking screw

The trays are not held by one common lever: each has its own locking screw, so a filter cannot drop out during a fast move or a drone flight. A tray takes glass 2 to 4 mm thick, which covers 4×5.65″ filters from practically every brand.

Anti-reflective finish inside and on the flag

The inside of the matte box and the top flag carry an anti-reflective finish developed by Tilta. It swallows stray light by scattered reflection instead of returning it into the lens, so the image does not veil even against the light.

Built to be extended

The Starter Kit is the entry point to the whole system. Clamp-on adapters in other diameters, a third tray with its body, side and bottom flags, the swing-away and rod adapters, rubber donuts, hard mattes and the 114 mm variable ND filter are all added later.

How the Starter Kit differs from the other kits

Against the MB-T17 Basic Kit: the Starter Kit has one clamp-on adapter instead of four (95, 110, 114 and 136 mm), two filter trays instead of three, and no 67 to 82 mm step-down rings, no mounting bracket for 15 mm LWS rods and no carrying case.

Against the MB-T17-A VND Kit: that one in turn has no step-down rings, which the Basic Kit does have — but it does include the 114 mm variable ND filter, the swing-away and rod adapters, rubber donuts, hard mattes, a universal motor adapter and a case. The difference between the kits is therefore not simply "more and less"; each has something the other does not.
